Win- win for everyone.

Featured Farmer: Ruvalcaba Nursery

Bunches of fresh cut flowers stand tall in the white, water filled buckets that Ana Ruvalcaba brings to markets to fill her stand each week. Her signature words of "stop and smell the roses" are familiar to many of the regular passer-bys, but hand printed signs identifying the flowers tells you there are more than just beautiful roses to choose from.

Ruvalcaba Nursery is located in Prunedale in Monterey County. As a family operated business everyone does their share of growing, cutting and selling seasonal flowers. Ana and husband Nick still live on the farm in Prunedale in Monterey County and travel to several markets during the week.

Ana's stand is always bursting with the colors of the season – in November there are bunches of orange and red marigolds, bright yellow to rich gold colored sunflowers, burgundy tinged alstroemeria and a splash of ornamental grasses in amongst the mix. The dahlias are one of my favorite flowers and Ana's fall selection is outstanding – plenty of different sizes and colors to fill anyone's favorite vase.

Ana is happy to customize an arrangement of flowers after you pick out your favorite bunches. Ana is also happy to offer some expert advice when you ask for help and then finish off the bouquet with special wrap and ribbon.

Ruvalcaba Nursery designates a few acres at a time to growing flowers specifically for the farmers' markets. They do not target the holidays by raising prices during peak times – Ana is proud to offer freshness and fair prices all year round. As long as customers give her a week's notice she can put together special orders for weddings, graduations, holidays or quinceaneras.

Ana sees her repeat customers every couple of weeks. These flowers are fresh cut and stay fresh for more than a week as long as the water is changed a couple of times. In the cooler weather Ana suggests setting the flowers in a vase filled with warm water to help open them up.

Look for Ruvalcaba Nursery at the Saturday Orinda market until November 20 and at the Sunday Walnut Creek market year round.
