When you shop at a farmers' market you are buying a lot more
than just food. You are supporting a piece of your local community.
Your farmers' market is a weekly or more often, destination
to not only be able to purchase the freshest possible produce
for yourself and your family but also a place to reconnect with
your community. You may run into your friends and neighbors.
You may see a particular local non profit that you have always
wanted to know more about and support through volunteering or
financially. You will run into your kid's friends and teammates.
You will often run into local elected officials and ask questions
of them that have to do with issues in your town.
All of this makes for a strong community connection.
On any given day at the farmers' market you may be able to get information about your local community choir or opera company. You may connect with the town arts association or Friends of the Library chapter. Perhaps you will get the burning gardening questions answered by a Master Gardener. Maybe you will run into a bunch of kids promoting their school garden or a school selling baskets to promote health and independence for a village of underprivileged women and children in Africa.
You will always hear a local musician and see local artist plying their trades. You may even be tempted to tryout some of your own skills or talents at your farmers market. The farmers' market
has always been a great incubator of small businesses helping them grow and prosper.
It all comes down to healthy choices for yourself, your family and your community.
