Try this tip from Monica, a Lafayette customer:
Add some moisture to your turkey burgers by mixing in some chopped Fresh Market Nectarines into the patties before you grill! For something extra special, sautee a handful of chopped stone fruit, season with chili powder for a new twist on topping your burger!

FEATURED FARMERS: G & S Farms and Simoni & Missoni Farms |

The choices are few – yellow, white or bi-color- but they’re sweet. Corn continues its star status at the farmers’ markets until September. California ranks only second to Florida in total tonnage so you know we’re in a good spot to find juicy, sweet corn.
G & S Farms from Brentwood sells fresh cut cobs of corn at the Lafayette market on Thursdays. Freshness is their best selling point. The cobs are packed with ice before coming to market to maintain flavor and texture, ready for cooking. If storage is necessary wrap unhusked ears in damp paper towels and place in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for a day or two.
The supersweet white and yellow corn from Brentwood’s Simoni & Missoni Farms is at the Walnut Creek market. Supersweets are the latest development in hybrid corn and hold on to their sweetness for a longer period of time after harvest. They stay sweeter longer since the normal conversion of sugar to starch is slower. The slightly crunchy, corny tasting kernels of yellow corn are still my favorite but I find myself outnumbered by the majority of shoppers who go straight to the bins of white varieties.
There’s no peeling necessary to check out the rows of kernels under the husk. Feel the cob to find rows of corn kernels running from top to bottom – if it’s full it’s ready to pop in the bag, and the growers will love you for leaving their kernels of corn snug in their husks. Place the cobs silk end down in the bag – stem end down punctures the bag every time.
Simple methods are best to cook corn and leftovers don’t need to go to waste – cut cooled, cooked corn from the ears and add to salsas, stews, salads and soups.
TO BOIL: Shuck corn, remove silk at tip and drop into a large pot two thirds full of boiling water. Cover and boil gently for 3 to 4 minutes (depending on size). Drain and enjoy with butter, flavored butters (use tarragon or dill) and a sprinkle of salt.
TO GRILL: Remove a few husks from the outside of the ear of corn and tear into ¼ inch strips to make ties. Peel back but do not detach remaining husks, remove silk, then lay husks back in place around corn. Tie at silk end with the husk strips (or use kitchen string). Immerse in a sink of cold water for about 30 minutes. Drain and grill over medium heat turning frequently until hot – about 15 to 20 minutes.
TO ROAST IN FOIL: Remove husk and silk from corn. Brush corn with a little melted butter. Wrap each in heavy duty foil and roast on a hot grill for 15 to 20 minutes or in a 375 degree oven for 20 to 25 minutes.
Enjoy and see you at the market!
